Canterbury growers dominate national wheat growing awards

15 August 2016 - Three of the five winners at the recent United Wheat Growers National Wheat Competition Awards hail from the wider Canterbury area.

Strong organisation and methodical farming is the hallmark of the trio who won top honors in the Feed, Biscuit and Premium Milling classes. All are growers for Carrfields Ltd.

David Birkett, whose family farm is just out of Leeston, won the Feed category for the second consecutive year. Carrfields representative Peter Miller said the long term family farm is in an excellent location with particularly good soil.

“It’s been a difficult season and it’s amazing to get this result in such a dry year. The district is particularly well suited to wheat growing and renowned for high grain yields with excellent quality. David is an outstanding manager who has consistently produced excellent crops. He regularly tries many varieties but has found that Oakley, although an older variety, is still the best performer on his farm.”

Colin Hurst, whose farm is based at Makikihi hallway between Timaru and Waimate, was awarded first place in the Biscuit class. He is a previous winner at milling wheat competitions and is highly regarded for his organisational skills and management style.

Premium Milling class was taken out by Bruce and Grant Perry of Barrhill, between Rakaia and Methven. They are among the top growers in the region and achieve high yields, helped by their investment in quality irrigation.

Started in 2011, the national competition aims to celebrate success in the New Zealand wheat industry, and to identify wheat that has performed well on-farm.

Brian Leadley, United Wheat Growers director, said judging took into account several factors such as the grain’s moisture, weight, and size.  The judges commented that they were impressed by the quantity and quality of the entrants this year.

The 2016 competition was open to crops harvested in this year.
