Spring Sowing with Carrfields

Carrfields is excited to offer world class seed this spring, including award winning wheat varieties at the recent 2024 Arable Awards.

Cereal Varieties

Wheat

Whether you are looking to grow wheat for feed or for milling, we have two excellent varieties for you.

Cochise spring feed or milling wheat is a high yielding, quality grain. It is an easy to manage, early maturing variety that has high tiller numbers, strong disease package and great straw strength. Plant your Cochise wheat from early July to mid-September for the best results.

Alternatively, Raffles is our most flexible wheat variety. Proving extremely reliable, performing year after year to produce a high yield this variety is a go-to. Whether you’re planting this for feed or milling, Raffles has a wide sowing window and produces quality grain. Raffles wheat is widely accepted by New Zealand mills and is one of our best sellers. Plant it from mid-May to mid-September to achieve the best results.

Barley

Irina spring barley is the complete package. Irina consistently produces high yields and is known for its extremely strong straw strength. Irina has great disease resistance and is an easy crop to manage. Sow your Irina barley between mid-July and late November for these stand out results.

Milford spring feed barley is another reliable barley variety, with good yields and stiff straw. It also has a strong disease resistance package and is an easy crop to manage. Sow your Milford barley from early July to late November to get the best results.

Barley and Pea Silage Mix

Struggling with low quality feed and high Nitrogen use? Our premium barley and pea silage mix has higher protein and ME than cereals fed alone. Made up of 60% Rose Maple peas and 40% spring barley, this mix has the potential to yield upwards of 16 tonne of DM per Ha. It is a great option for wanting to turn your paddocks over quickly too, with a short growing season of only 12-15 weeks. As a forage crop, it also has the potential to add more than 70kg/Ha of Nitrogen to the following crop. This mix can be planted any time from August to November.

If cereal seed is not all you’re needing this spring, learn more about the retail seeds we offer, from diploid and tetraploid ryegrass, clovers, plantain, fescue, cocksfoot and other amenity grasses.
