Home Carrfields Announces Unconditional Agreement to Acquire Hinds Seed Cleaning
Carrfields is delighted to announce it has entered into an unconditional agreement to
purchase Hinds Seed Cleaning from the Ellis family, marking a significant strategic step in strengthening the group’s seed capabilities.
Founded more than 65 years ago by Vern and Phyllis Ellis, Hinds Seed Cleaning has been
owned and operated by the Ellis family for generations and has built a strong reputation as an independent, specialist seed processor servicing NZ farmers and seed companies.
Following completion, the business will continue to operate as a standalone entity, trading as Hinds Seed Cleaning 2026 Ltd. The operation will remain independently managed by Corey Reid-Macfarlane and supported by Brian Ellis for a period of time, with all staff retained and the business continuing to operate as it has historically.
Carrfields sees the acquisition as a strategic move as Hinds Seed Cleaning currently
processes large volumes of small seeds each year for Carrfields, with increasing pressure on processing timeframes and priorities to meet both international and domestic customer quality and deadlines. The acquisition enables deeper vertical integration across seed processing, calibration, treatment, and packaging, particularly as Carrfields and its subsidiary Winseed invest in new seed processing and calibration equipment not currently available in New Zealand.
“After 45 years in the industry, I have decided it’s time to retire. It has been a privilege to work with dedicated staff, loyal clients, and valued partners whose support has shaped our success. The relationships and trust built over the years mean a great deal to me.” said Brian Ellis.
“I wish the Carr family every success as they take the next step and am confident the
business is in capable hands. To ensure a smooth transition, I will remain available for a period. Thank you to everyone who has been part of this journey—your support is truly appreciated.”
Carrfields Group Managing Director Craig Carr said the acquisition represents another
significant milestone for the group.
“This is a progressive and exciting step for Carrfields and further cements the foundations we are building for the future,” said Mr Carr. “2025 has been a huge year for Carrfields, with several major milestones already announced, and this acquisition truly tops it off as we close out the year.”
The acquisition also comes ahead of a major milestone for Carrfields, with 2026 marking 50 years since the business was founded by Greg and Glenys Carr.
“As we look ahead to our 50th anniversary in 2026, this investment reflects our ongoing
commitment to innovation, growth, and supporting New Zealand’s seed industry for
generations to come,” Mr Carr said.
