Nutrient requirements
With some welcome rain of late, now is an important time to take check of your nutrient requirements in your winter feed crops to achieve the desired yield. Below are some key points to remember:
KALE
• Brassicas like kale are 2.5% Nitrogen, so be sure the paddock has been supplied enough from previous crops and fertiliser applications to hit your target yield.
• The closer to grazing you get with nitrogen applications, the warier you should be of nitrate poisoning risk.
FODDER BEAT
• Crop requirements for Nitrogen and other nutrients should all be on, check for trace elements now with a leaf test, and you can easily apply these with fungicides.
• For both crops, herbage tests are important for building a picture of soil and crop health.
